In the BIRT Report Designer, you will be given an option of what folder to store the new report in. New Report is slightly different in BIRT RCP Report Designer. Your report will automatically go to the workspace that it’s supposed to.
But, in the BIRT Report Designer, you’re going see a list of available folders in which to store the New Report. We want to select “MyProject”. This is the folder that we created in Task 1, Create a New Project, which was a lesson that only applied to those people using the BIRT Report Designer. From here on out, there shouldn’t be any major differences in this tutorial between the BIRT RCP Report Designer and BIRT Report Designer.
IMPORTANT: Avoid typing over the extension of the file name. The naming structure needs to be “report_name.rptdesign”. All of our report files end with “.rptdesign”. Make sure that you the type the filename extension correctly if you do end up accidentally deleting it.
Once, that’s done, click Next.
In the next window, you are given the choice of several different Report Templates. The nice thing about this window is that you can select the Report Template and you will get a miniature preview of the report’s structure right there in the window.
In the Preview for Blank Report, we can see that it has a Date function built into bottom of the report.
In my experience, I’d say that I use Blank Report 99% of the time. Most of the ad hoc custom reports people ask me to do don’t really fall into the other templates neatly. I might use those reports to get ideas on how to correctly structure my Blank Report, but I rarely have had the chance to use them without any modification.
The Blank Report gives you the versatility you need to make the report exactly the way you want it. With Blank Report selected, click Finish.
What you should be looking at in the Layout Editor is the shell of your report. This report is not tied to any data yet because you don’t have a Data Source and Data Set built. (We are going to covering those topics in the next 2 lessons.)
If you remember the Report Template for Blank Report, the Date function actually is designed to display at the bottom of the report when you have a table with data in there.
At this point, you have successfully created a New Report called “Customers”. We will be using this “Customers” report for the remaining tasks in the tutorial… so keep it handy.
