Building a data source is the step of reporting where you start to extract useful information from your own database.
For this lesson, what we are going to be doing is using the sample database as our source data. The sample database is built-in to Eclipse when you downloaded BIRT.
This will open a pop-up window called “New Data Source” where you select “Classic Models Inc. Sample Database”.
It’s a good practice to use data source names that are descriptive. That way, we can recognize our data source quickly. When we have 10 data sources, it would be very nice to know which one is which.
CAUTION: Don’t label your data sources as “data source 1” and “data source 2” because that kind of naming structure is going to be useless when you need to find it later.
This step is NOT complete until you test the connection. You want to know that the connection to the data source is set up properly.
To test the connection for your database, double click on our new data source, “ClassicModelsIncSampleDB”. (you can also right click it and select “Edit”).
This opens a window labeled “Edit Data Source“. Then click the button labeled “Test Connection…”
If you haven’t done it right, an error message will appear to help you troubleshoot where you have gone wrong.
